Phyllis E. Johnson was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, on January 3, 1913, the daughter of Swedish immigrants Justus Johnson and Walborg Falk. She had two siblings: Estelle and Justus. The family later moved to Hartford, Connecticut. Johnson attended Connecticut College, and later earned a degree from Barnard College. She married Dr. Howard D.
